Ouija Won’t Be Scary

Writers briefly hint at what’s to come

Looks like we won’t be following Ouija as closely as we have been since the project’s announcement.

Based on the popular spooky ol’ slice of cardboard that supposedly lets you communicate with the supernatural, the film is being produced by Universal and Platinum Dunes and Tron Legacy‘s writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz recently confirmed one thing about the project: It won’t be scary.

“No. It’s Indiana Jones – that kind of tone,” says Horowitz. “It’s a big adventure movie.”

Sort of like Jumanji? Fair enough. Out of the spate of board games being turned into films, it looked like we had a horror movie on the way with Ouija (especially given the board game’s nature). But it seems totally logical to make Ouija an action-adventure film, right?

Right?

Exclusive: Juliet Snowden, Stiles White Talk Horrors, Appeal of Universal’s Ouija Film

The long-mooted Ouija film has faced a few ups and downs.  Originally conceived as a big-budget adventure movie, Ouija, naturally, takes its cue from the Hasbro “game” of the same name.  The project saw its beginnings at Universal, but it was kicked over to Paramount where McG was attached to helm.   Earlier this year, however, Ouija reverted back to Universal with Blumhouse Productions (Paranormal Activity), Platinum Dunes (Friday the 13th) and Hasbro (Transformers, Battleship) producing.  It was then that Juliet Snowden and Stiles White were revealed to be not just the writers, but the directors as well.

The pair, who penned Boogeyman, Knowing and this week’s release, The Possession, spoke to Shock Till You Drop last night at the red carpet premiere of the latter and talked about the appeal of Ouija, the potential for good on-screen frights and potential release month.

“It was originally a $100 million movie, now it’s a $5 million movie with us,” Snowden laughed when we congratulated them on the project.  “Jason [Blum], Michael [Bay] and the Platinum Dunes guys, Universal and Hasbro – that’s a lot to answer to.”

Asked if their take will still contained the previous script’s rumored “adventure” angle, White said, “For us, there was that version, but we’ve got Blum on board now, it’s going to be a smaller budget, a more contained idea.  We just love the idea, when Juliet was growing up, her older sister had a Ouija board, my grandparents had a Ouija board up on the shelf in the closet, so I remember one – I’m not sure if I ever played with one, I had a healthy sense of caution with it.  I love the idea it’s a game, but not really a game.  It’s sold as a game because where else can you put it in the store?”

“Contact spirits with something you find on the shelf at Walmart or Target?” Snowden continued, “That’s where we’re coming from with the story, it’s not just about one board, it’s any board and that’s what makes it scary.”

White added, “The idea that the board spells out messages – as a psychological horror film, we just felt there was a lot to play with there.  We pitched our ideas, we’re currently writing the script right now, the process is moving quickly.  Once you get into the writing of it, you’re visualizing it from the get-go when you’re signed on to direct.”

“The timeline is fast, we’re moving fast,” Snowden said.  “We have a release date, next October…”

“Sometime in 2013,” White quickly interjected, however, we suspect Snowden may have let something slip.

October does sound like an ideal time for a supernatural yarn like Ouija, perhaps the film aims to corner Paranormal Activity‘s space during that month.

Ouija Finds Its Leading Man, Plot Details Revealed

Ouija is a film that has been in development for a bit now.  It started out as a big Jumanji-esque adventure based on the Hasbro board game, but after the budget became a bit too much for the studio, it was reworked into something smaller.

Written and directed by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White (The Possession), the film, per Deadline, now concerns "a group of teens playing with a Ouija board, making contact with an evil spirit, and desperately trying to close the door they’ve opened before meeting their own fate."

So, they're aiming for "less adventure" and more "horror."  Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes are producing for Universal and, today, we're learning Daren Kagasoff is set to star.  He got his start in the biz in The Secret Life of the American Teenager.  Ouija is his big screen feature debut.

Brad Fuller on The Purge 2, Ouija and Nightmare on Elm Street

The Purge 2CraveOnline met up with producer Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes at the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday and got a lot of updates on the company's upcoming horror offerings.

Following the success of the first, low-budget film, Universal Pictures has already set a June 20, 2014 release date for The Purge 2, starring Frank Grillo. "The sequel to 'The Purge' delivers on the promise of the original in that we’re not staying in the house. It's not a home invasion movie," Fuller told the site. "This is you’re out in the streets with people purging and a group of people who get stuck in the middle of it and have to get from point A to point B."

Platinum Dunes also has the low-budget Ouija movie in production right now and is aiming for a PG-13 rating. "Today is day 17 out of 25. We're shooting it here in Los Angeles. That is a fairly low-budgeted movie. It's in the Purge-ish range. It's the story that you think it is. It's the story about a group of kids who take out a Ouija board and start playing a game, and all hell breaks loose… In our movie, the Ouija board is a communication device. Our kids tap into something horrible and the Ouija board is the way that the entity comes in and is going to have to go out."

And what about another installment in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise? "You know what? I haven't heard a thing. It’s a little bit disappointing, said Fuller. "We were very proud of that movie. It was Rooney Mara's first starring role. In terms of pure box office, I think that's our highest grossing film worldwide. I'd love to do another one, but I feel that way about all of our films. We don't jump into these films unless we actually loved the characters or the story. I'd love to make Freddy Krueger movies every couple years. It'd be fantastic."

Jackie Earle Haley was signed for two more movies, but Fuller doesn't know the details of his deal. "I really don't know his deal so I don't know when it runs out, but that's up to New Line and if they want to do it, they will. New Line had such a huge hit with 'The Conjuring' and that was a fantastic movie and it feels like New Line might be moving away from the kind of horror with a lot of blood and that kind of thing in their movie, more towards what 'The Conjuring' was. At least that's what I've heard, but no one has talked to us about Nightmare on Elm Street."

Ouija Opening This October, Del Toro’s Crimson Peak Pushed

OuijaUniversal is making some adjustments to its genre line-up.  Let's begin with Ouija.  The Platinum Dunes/Blumhouse Productions effort will open October 14th.

The film stars Olivia Cooke, Erin Moriarity, Douglas Smith, Bianca Santos and Daren Kagasoff and is directed by Stiles White.  Ouija concerns a group of friends use the eponymous board game in an attempt to contact a deceased friend, but only open a door to a malevolent force instead.

Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro's next feature film, Crimson Peak, is no longer an April 2015 release.  Instead, Universal is giving that film an October 16, 2015 debut.

Charlie Hunnam, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska are set to star.

When we spoke to Del Toro last year, he told us: “Crimson Peak is a much, much, much smaller movie, completely character-driven.  It’s an adult movie, an R-rated movie, pretty adult.  Shockingly different from anything I’ve done in the English language.  Normally, when I go to do a movie in America for the spectacle and younger audience, for Blade or whatever.  This movie’s tone is scary and it’s the first time I get to do a movie more akin to what I do in the Spanish movies.”

The logline goes like this: In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider.  Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers.

So, There’s a Trailer for Ouija in Theaters Now…

OuijaUnexpectedly, the trailer for Ouija – a Universal release – is making its debut in theaters this weekend. If you venture out to see The Fault in Our Stars, there's a very good chance you'll see it. This is an unusual move these days as it seems a week doesn't go by where a trailer – or the trailer for a trailer – makes its online debut, heralding its arrival in multiplexes everywhere.

I'm sure it'll find its way onto the web eventually, maybe as soon as later today or maybe next week. In that case, we'll feature it here, of course. Based on Twitter chatter, the trailer seems to be playing very well. I'm definitely curious.

The film is the latest production from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes. Stiles White directs and Olivia Cooke, Shelley Hennig, Douglas Smith, Bianca Santos and Daren Kagasoff star. They play group of friends use a Ouija board in an attempt to contact a deceased friend, but only open a door to a malevolent force instead.

The film is slated for an October 24th release.

Ouija Possession Caught on Video, Not Part of Viral Promotion

possession-ouija?Let me just state up front that the video here is actually not part of a viral gimmick or promotion for Ouija, the film opening in theaters October 24th. This is, according to Daily Mail, video of a 22-year-old girl who reportedly became posssessed after screwing around with a Ouija board in the Mexican village of San Juan Tlacotenco. The girl, her brother and her cousin – all from the U.S. – began playing with the game until, "minutes into it, she apparently started 'growling' and thrashing around in a 'trance-like' state."

Her brother and cousin's quickly descended into a similar sort of behavior. They experienced "blindness, deafness and hallucinations." The paramedics were called, but only because a local Catholic priest refrained to perform an exorcism because the trio did not attend church.

Were they pranking everyone or is it the real deal? You decide.

As for Ouija, the aforementioned film – it's produced by Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes. The story concerns a group of friends use a Ouija board in an attempt to contact a deceased friend, but only open a door to a malevolent force instead. Stiles White directs and Olivia Cooke, Shelley Hennig, Douglas Smith, Bianca Santos and Daren Kagasoff star.

Discussion: Are Audiences Getting Tired of the Supernatural?

$

supernatural-horrorDeliver Us from Evil opened at the start of the 4th of July holiday weekend. To date, it has grossed $15 million since opening Wednesday, July 2nd, but box office analysts are focusing their targets on the film's $9.5 million weekend gross and taking fire. Understandable. That's a pretty weak weekend performance. It was up against the new comedy Tammy and holdovers likes Transformers22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon. If you recall, Deliver Us from Evil was pushed up from its original 2015 release date because Sony was so confident in the film that it thought Deliver could earn some big bucks akin to The Conjuring's mid-summer success last year.

Regardless of the quality of Deliver Us from Evil, I honestly think the film would have had a tough go of it at the box office because, more or less…audiences are getting supernatural fatigue.

This year we've seen four other major supernatural releases open to middling or poor box office numbers. Take a look:

  • Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (Opening weekend: $18.3 million / Final domestic: $32.4 million – a low performance by this franchise's standard)
  • Devil's Due (Opening weekend: $8.3 million / Final domestic: $15.8 million)
  • Oculus (Opening weekend: $12 million / Final domestic: $27.6 million)
  • The Quiet Ones (Opening weekend: $3.8 million / Final domestic: $8.5 million)

It's clear audiences are trying to send a message to Hollywood – enough with the exorcism, hauntings and possessions. It's all bleeding together. It's hard to differentiate one from the other. Certainly, supernatural fare has been felt over the years with Insidious and the Paranormal Activity films, but the last few months have been especially busy. And within the span of a year, Hollywood has effectively made moviegoers grow weary of these types of films and their apathetic reaction is being felt at the box office. Hollywood's fixation on capturing The Conjuring's success could be partially to blame. The VOD market is always expanding, welcoming more smaller budgeted imitators that flood the market – I'd like to think this is to blame, too.

But the bottom line is this: The audience is ready to move on. Where Hollywood likes to dwell on the past's success and try to recapture whatever worked over and over and over, audiences are looking for the next big thing in horror that may not have anything to do at all with Conjuring-like thrills. What that next "thing" is we never know. I get asked that all of the time: "What the next big thing?" The answer doesn't come easy. But when that special horror film hits, you can just feel it. I felt that way when I saw The Conjuring (it also helped that it had a brilliant ad campaign).

Side note: I ranted a bit about "the supernatural at the box office" via Twitter and one Shock reader suggested a return to slasher films. I honestly think a studio needs to have a pretty daring, crazy, inventive idea for the slasher film to catch on again.

As for the supernatural – it may be time to go. Of course, I say this when there's another Paranormal Activity on the way along with JessebelleAnnabelle (a Conjuring spin-off), AmityvilleOuijaAs Above So Below, the Poltergeist remake, Insidious Chapter 3 and The Conjuring 2. So, "the supernatural" isn't going to be departing our theaters any time soon, but I think now would be a good time for studios to start thinking of a contingency plan and mine some other horror genres to reignite the box office.

Insidious Chapter 3 Trailer to Hit the Screen This Friday?

Insidious Chapter 3 posterA Shock reader who works for a movie theater informed us today that they’ve received the teaser trailer for Insidious Chapter 3 and it’s apparently going to run before Ouija when the film opens this Friday, October 24th.

This makes sense because the latter is a Blumhouse Production (well, a joint production with Platinum Dunes that’s getting released through Universal).

Insidious Chapter 3 stars Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott alongside Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, and Whannell, with the latter trio reprising their roles from the first two movies in the franchise.

In the film, a twisted new tale of terror begins for a teenage girl and her family, predating the haunting of the Lambert family in the earlier movies and revealing more mysteries of the otherworldly realm The Further.

Insidious Chapter 3 opens in theaters May 29, 2015.

Ouija, meanwhile, is directed by Stiles White and stars Olivia Cooke, Douglas Smith, Bianca Santos, Daren Kagasoff, Vivis Colombetti, Ana Coto and Erin Moriarty.

It follows a group of friends who must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board.

This Friday sees the release of Ouija and, recently, Shock Till You Drop attended a screening of the supernatural thriller at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Following a look at the film, we joined cast members Olivia Cooke, Daren Kagasoff, Shelley Hennig, Ana Coto and Bianca Santos in the spooky locale to chat about their experience working on this Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes production.

The gang talk about the “hilarious” time they had on set, Witchboard, working with director Stiles White, the proper handling of a Ouija board and why some cast members think the film is a “good family horror movie.” Now, that’s not all… We also had a rather spoiler-y conversation with the cast, stay tuned for that video after the film’s release on October 24th.

Review: Ouija Favors Cheap Scares Over Genuine Fear

review score 4ouija posterIs it scary? No.  Is it occasionally startling? Occasionally, but it’s so focused on getting that startle that it gives up on anything approaching suspense.

It all starts off well enough when young ingénue Debbie (Henning) suddenly and surprisingly hangs herself in her living room. As catalyst, it’s a good one. The idea of something from the outside taking over your motor control and forcing you to self-harm is both viscerally and existentially horrifying (particularly if the victim is aware of what is happening to them). It also allows for the introduction of Debbie’s friends without much of the meet-cute and knowing cleverness which has been thrust on the teen foci of horror films since Scream. Debbie’s friends are devastated by her death and in their attempts to grieve they talk to each other like real human beings at not characters from a John Hughes film. It gives weight to their bond which is vital to making their deaths exert any sort of feeling on the audience beyond the thrill of the moment.

Debbie’s death hits no one harder than her best friend Laine (Cooke) who refuses to believe everything is as clear as it’s being made to look. Investigating the final days of Debbie’s life, Laine learns of the Ouija board her friend discovered and begins to suspect (with very little reason) that Debbie had made contact with something or someone from beyond and it killed her.

This is where everything begins to fall apart, for Laine and for us.

Co-writer/director Stiles White (in his directorial debut) quickly dives into the pool of horror film clichés, pulling everyone with him whether they want to go or not. Because this is a film about teens in danger all adults are quickly brushed aside in order to make room for the teens to start controlling the action. Which basically means to make room for them to make horrible decisions like using their dead friends Ouija board in the house she killed herself in, and then going back and doing it again. Nor do they bother to return even as the body count begins to stack up.

The interesting investigation angle also takes a turn for the worse as White works to get it out of the way as quickly as possible once his plot has started, in order to spend more time on his suspense moments. Exposition becomes a chore dealt with as peremptorily and lazily as possible. Debbie, it turns out, was a narcissist who video-taped everything she did, including her discovery and experiments with the Ouija board, so that others can discover the proof of what has been going on just in time to move the next act along. And anything the videos won’t inform about, Laine’s spiritual housekeeper Nona (Colombetti) has handy-dandy information about just in time to make sure we understand the mechanics of the final confrontation.  And when a horror film becomes about mechanics (‘you must stand at this spot and recite this incantation at just this time to remove the demon’) it becomes a known quantity which destroys suspense. Suspense is about the fear of the unknown.

Yes, exposition is hard and tedious and often the worst part of writing, but that’s no excuse for hackery, which is what we get the more Ouija goes on.  Part of that is the length, at a bare 90 minutes White has cut his film to the bone, but with an eye towards making the most of his scares he’s had to lose much of the connective tissue that would make those thrills matter. Coherence eventually goes out the window as Ouija tries to build speed to its conclusion, a side effect of which being you won’t have time to wonder about the logic of the ghost reaching out to the real world and killing people until it is released from the bonds holding it down so that it will be free to reach out to the real world and kill people. That’s mostly because after a promising start White quickly falls victim to the horror film curse as he sets aside suspense and thrills as a goal and aims solely for visceral scares, the kind that get the adrenaline pumping for a moment, then disappear and are forgotten. As usually happens, the law of diminishing returns quickly takes hold after the first person jumps out of the shadows, leaving White to scramble to keep his momentum going even as he cuts off all avenues for doing so.

Ouija sticks so firmly to the modern horror film playbook that it will surely appeal to fans of the modern horror film. But like the jump scares the film revels in, once the initial excitement passes it will quickly be forgotten in the chase for the next thing.

Ouija Wins the Weekend Box Office with $20 Million

ouijaboxofficeThe weekend before Halloween saw the release of an obligatory horror film in the form of Ouija (Universal), pairing Blumhouse Productions and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes for a low-budget supernatural thriller based on the popular Hasbro sleepover party game.

Opening on Thursday night and taking in $8.3 million in its first 24 hours, Ouija ended up with an estimated $20 million for the weekend in its 2,858 locations, or $7,000 per theater. 69% of the audience for the movie was female, but its “C” CinemaScore is not a good sign for the movie sustaining any sort of legs even with Halloween next Friday.

Although New Line’s horror prequel Annabelle has fallen out of the Top 10 with $3.3 million grossed ths weekend, it has now grossed over $200 million with just $79.5 million of that grossed in North America. Being that the movie reportedly cost $6.5 million to produce, that’s another hugely profitable horror movie for New Line following last year’s The Conjuring. This past week, it was announced that director James Wan would be returning for the sequel to the 2013 horror hit, to be released in 2016.

Fuller and Form Talk The Developing Friday the 13th and Ouija 2

Friday the 13th, Jason

And by talk, I mean mention. And by mention, I mean in very brief sentences. The news is barely there!

As I noted in my Most Anticipated of 2015, there’s a new Friday the 13th film slated for release this November. Will we see it take form by then? It’s certainly possible, considering how quickly studio horror’s current major franchises (Paranormal ActivityThe Purge) have previously turned around. Even Larry Zerner, of Friday the 13th Part 3 noted on Twitter, “On F13-3d we started filming in March and release was 8/13, so it’s still possible..” And so, it’s not terribly surprising that producer Andrew Form, speaking to Collider, said, “Just working on the script still. Hoping to make that movie this year…” Perhaps more interesting is the seeming lack of hard commitment to making November 13th.

Form also added, “…and Brad, I’m gonna confirm that Jason is in the movie.” Of course, Jason is also in 1980’s Friday the 13th.

As far as a follow-up to last October’s teen horror entry Ouija, Form’s regular co-producer and Platinum Dunes co-creator Brad Fuller, also speaking to Collider, simply states, “Ouija 2 is coming.”

Get stoked?
